Matteo Grassi
The history of the company Matteograssi began in 1880 in the town of Mariano Comense in the region of Brianza north of Milan, where the head of the Grassi family opened a shop for the manufacture of saddles, bridles, reins and other leather equipment for both riding and work horses. The family business changed after World War II as Brianza became one of the busiest industrial regions of the country and the Grassi family adapted to the new situation. In the fifties and sixties, the family built upon its many years of experience in the saddlery business and gradually began to produce leather items for many other firms, including the most famous brands in interior decoration. In 1978, the family decided to establish the company Matteograssi and develop a furniture line of its own.
Matteograssi’s collections have excelled by their very interesting design from the very beginning. Tito Agnoli, Carlo Bartoli, Piero Lissoni, Alessandro Mendini, Franco Poli, Eoos, Luigi Massoni, Jean Nouvel, Matteo Nunziati, Mauro Lipparini and Rodolfo Dordoni are but a few names who have designed chairs, tables, sofas and beds for the company. These talented designers are Matteograssi’s "genetic heritage", who have contributed to shape the company’s business decisions. The quality of Matteograssi’s craftsmanship has encouraged the company to experiment with seating furniture for applications that had excluded leather in the first place for being considered too delicate and difficult in terms of care.
For that reason, Matteograssi has specialised in fitting out airports, offices and public space in general. Matteograssi’s first lounges were installed in 1990 at the airports of Fiumicino (Rome), Frankfurt and Malpensa (Milan), followed by international projects for the airports of Paris Charles De Gaulle, Athens, Dubai, Beijing, Bucharest, Kiev and Djakarta as well as VIP lounges for many airlines.
Matteograssi’s success is based on a flexible production system which allows customised yet cost-effective solutions, a specific system of global communication with business partners, efficient business organisation as well as stylish projects for clients, characterised by highly ergonomic solutions and innovative functions.
In 2004, the company received the "Compasso D’oro" award for its Kube seating system.
